About Me

I am a multidisciplinary artist working in abstract art, photography, and textile design.

I grew up in the village of Beckford in Gloucestershire, and from an early age was brought up in an arts environment. My parents started a silk printing company, Beckford Silk, in 1974, which remains family-run to this day.

I graduated from Cheltenham College of Art in 1992 with a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting. After graduating, I was involved in numerous design-based projects, from mural painting and interior shop design to textile and product design. In 1993 I developed my art further, delving into product design with a stall at Portobello Road Market that grew into Food For Funk (1993-1997.) I moved to London in 1997.

In 2013 I decided to return to painting, with my central style being abstract colour and splash paintings.

I currently live and work in Hertford, where I moved in 2020.

Work and Style

I try to convey the joy and creative interplay of colour. Colour was a large part of Food For Funk’s kitsch style, it's the dominant theme of my textile design, and it influences my abstract painting.

My splash paintings convey a bolder abstract style. Large areas of colour are dripped, poured, and flicked onto the canvas. This is a departure from my previous work which was tonally more even. I begin each painting with a coloured ground and allow it to develop organically as the layers build up over time. The process is complete once I feel that the mark making and tones are of interest whilst retaining a spontaneous and fresh look.

I am inspired by Howard Hodgkin, Albert Irving, Terry Frost, John Hoyland, and the graffiti artist Mr Brainwash.

Alongside painting, I am also more recently developing my photography. I am particularly interested in street style, and take inspiration from the work of Daido Moriyama, Malick Sidibe, and Andreas Gursky.
